Each year, no less than 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted. It represents around 30% of all the food that is created. The total amount of food wasted in a country is correlated with the wealth of this country. Richer it is, greater is its waste.
Moreover, it represents a huge source of population. As written in the UN environment program, if food waste were a country, it would be the third-biggest greenhouse gas emitter, just behind China and the US. 3.3 billion tons of CO2 are released for this food that we do not even eat or use.
Those figures are alarming. This is why companies and individuals need to act to reduce the global amount of food wasted. Fortunately, lots of companies are now acting against food waste, whether it's reusing food loss, remanufacturing food waste, or even by helping consumers to be more responsible. They are active on different levels of the supply chain, which is essential to decrease our wastes effectively. We found 15 great companies that we found were worth mentioning.
First, let's talk about companies that are recycling products. Or should we say upcycling? The difference lies in a very simple fact :
Recycling means that the product that is recycled will have a lower or equivalent value as the original product. But upcycling means that the product will gain value during the process. This is why upcycling is very common in art or design, you take old and used products to create a brand new piece of art or furniture. But this process is also applicable to food and helps reduce food waste.
ReGrained is an American company that is reusing grains after they were used to brew beers. Those grains have an exceptional nutritional value, and it would be a shame to waste them. That's how Regrained came with the idea to create delicious snacks from those grains. They have upcycled thousands of kilos of grains, and this number is growing as we speak.
Planetarians is using the leftovers of sunflower seeds after those were used for oil extraction, the so-called "oilcake". With it, they create sunflowers chips with a high nutritional value without wasting tons of sunflowers leftovers.
Barnana is a company using ‘ugly’ bananas to create delicious snacks. You may wonder why, it’s only because if it were not for Barnana, those bananas would go straight into the trash. Because they are not suitable for sale.
As its name suggests, EatScraps uses scraps - vegetables that are not suitable for sale, that are left in the fields because they’re not aesthetically pleasing. The result is delicious frozen pizzas, that your freezer will be glad to welcome.
Kromkommer is a dutch company that also uses vegetables and fruits, not beautiful enough to be sold, but this time, the results are wonderful soups. They are at this time evolving into a company to sensibilize children about crooked vegetables, their soups will not be available any longer. But this is an amazing other way to reduce waste!
Fruits and vegetables definitely offer great opportunities to upcycling. Once again, those who are not suitable for sale are used to create great products, such as snack bars.

TooGoodToGo is a mobile application that enables companies to sell their unsold at a much lower price at the end of the day. The food is still perfectly fine, but companies can't sell it anymore. It is profitable for everyone, customers have food at a lower price, and companies don't have to throw food away. And of course, it reduces food waste.
Winnow is a platform to help professionals of the agro-food industry tracking their waste to prevent them. It's hard to reduce your waste when you don't know exactly what it is thrown away. Winnow supports better logistics to know exactly what is necessary and what will be extra. They made a partnership with Ikea in the UK, and together they achieved a 50% decrease in their waste.
Goodr believes in better logistics to reduce food waste. That's why their goal is to "provide a triple-win solution" by reducing greenhouse emissions, giving food surplus to people in need, and by improving the results of a company by giving to charities.
Phenix is a platform to revalue unsold goods. They have a solution for every professional in the agro-food sector. Whether it's selling those products to a lower price, giving them to charities or even revaluing them into animal food, their goal is to achieve the "zero-food-waste".
Flashfood is a mobile app that is beneficial for both customers and retailers. It allows the retailers to display the goods that are on the verge of expiring on the app, and people just have to go pick them up - with a discount. The amount of food that is thrown away because the expiration date is over, is huge. And a move that simple can have a great impact on reducing food waste from retailers.
Food for all is also a company that enables restaurants, bars, coffee-shops ... to sell their unsold products at a much lower price at the end of the day. The principle is simple: you choose where you want to buy extra food from, you pay directly on the app and you pick your meals up.
My foody is an Italian company that will help you find the expiring products in the shops next to you. You almost do your shopping the way you are used to, except you are helping to reduce waste.
